Resting Metabolic Rate.
The Resting Metabolic Rate (also called RMR) is the rate at which your body burns energy when it is at complete rest. This energy is used by your body to perform the most basic functions when your body is at rest and include things like breathing, circulating blood or basic brain functions.
Knowing how many calories you expend at rest will allow you to adjust your training and nutritional intake to suit your health and fitness goals. You can calculate the basal metabolic rate using a mathematical formula or online calculator, yet the most accurate data can be acquired through our RMR screening.
Resting Metabolic Rate Screening
Measurement of resting metabolic rate (RMR) by indirect calorimetry provides information at rest in the form of:
-
Oxygen consumption (VO2)
-
Carbon dioxide production (VCO2)
-
Respiratory exchange ratio (RER = VCO2 / VO2).
These provide valuable information regarding energy requirements and what fuels are being oxidized at rest (1).
Tests can be completed without a doctors referral with results explained directly after the test in approximately 30 minutes. Advice and recommendations will be given on how to use physical activity to improve your health and wellbeing.
We do recommend that you discuss your results with your exercise specialist, doctor or nutritionist/dietitian.
